The Swish

This intervention was originally designed by Drs Bandler and Grinder to be used through visualisation but for those who experience difficulties with achieving clear visualisation I recommend drawing the appropriate pictures on card and manipulating them as if they were visualisation. It is even possible to make a computer animation if you have the expertise in this area.

For people who, like myself, work primarily with kineasthetics - feelings in the body to represent ideas and information - the Swish works best if you conjure up the feeling you relate with each picture as you perform the intervention.

The principle upon which the "Swish" operates is that of showing the unconscious where it is at the moment and then changing it's course of action in response to a certain stimulation so as to cause it to take a new direction.

The Swish is a very Popular intervention and can be used effectively in all manner of situations where you want to change unconscious motivation so as to react differently in a certain situation.

This might be as simple as wanting to stop biting your nails or as deep seated as changing from a failure to a success in life. I realise that sounds a little superficial but it all depends upon one's priorities and  viewpoint. For demonstration purposes I shall use habit control as the subject. Imagine you want to stop smoking:

Create a picture which signifies the lead-up to the behaviour you wish to eliminate. In this instance a picture of yourself in a situation which would lead to your wanting a cigarette. This picture must be associated - your own hands holding a cigarette seen through your own eyes, say. Draw the picture on a piece of card if you have trouble with visualisation.

Next create a picture of how you would like to be. This picture might be yourself happily watching other smokers (rather than making their lives a misery) while not wanting a cigarette yourself. I have been asked how the picture might show intent; actually your mind anchors the intent with the request for that type of picture even though it might not be visually apparent. Put an “I” in the corner if you wish.

It is vitally important that this picture be dissociated; you should be able to see yourself from some point outside yourself. If you are drawing, place this picture on the other side of your piece of card.

We are now going to create a one-two effect with the pictures. Conjure up a picture of a type of free-standing black-board which is able to turn over top to bottom so as to replace the front side with the rear. Such are usually supported by a pin into each side edge of the board half way down to act as a pivot.

On the front face project your first picture. Spin the board over to expose the second picture on the reverse. Open your eyes. Repeat five times. If you are using card then close your eyes after each pair of pictures or look away.

What you are doing is saying to your unconscious, "From here go there." It can be astoundingly effective.

Test by future pacing or testing the behaviour patterns live if appropriate. If you are less than 100% successful repeat. If the issue remains then the problem probably lies with the pictures. Try new ones and make sure they are associated and dissociated respectively.
